Revtrail vs Matomo

Matomo is the most feature-complete open-source analytics platform there is — ecommerce, heatmaps, session recording, goals, a plugin marketplace, and a free self-hosted edition with unlimited hits. Comparing it to Revtrail is comparing a suite to a single tool, and which one wins depends entirely on what you're staffed to run.

Suite versus tool

Matomo will do more than Revtrail on almost any axis you name, because it's a platform with fifteen years of features and a plugin marketplace behind it. That breadth has a cost that shows up as configuration: hits, goals, ecommerce items, segments, and archiving settings are all knobs you're expected to turn. If you have someone whose job includes analytics, Matomo rewards them. If nobody's job includes analytics, the knobs stay at their defaults and the suite quietly becomes an expensive traffic counter.

Free is real, and so is the archiving cron

Matomo On-Premise Community genuinely is free with unlimited hits, and for a site with modest traffic it runs happily on cheap hardware. The thing to plan for is the archiving process: Matomo pre-aggregates reports on a schedule, and at higher volumes tuning that job — and the database behind it — becomes real maintenance. Budget for it or use Matomo Cloud, where their pricing starts above ours.

Ecommerce tracking is not subscription attribution

Matomo's ecommerce reporting is mature and well suited to a store: orders, items, categories, cart abandonment. It's built around the transaction. Revtrail is built around the customer: first touch, signup, first payment, and every renewal after it, credited to one channel so you can compare LTV by source. For a Shopify store, Matomo's model is closer to what you want. For a SaaS with monthly plans, ours is.

So which one should you use?

Choose Matomo if you want one platform for everything, you have someone to run it, or free self-hosting is the deciding factor. Choose Revtrail if you sell subscriptions, you want revenue attribution without configuring an analytics platform, and you'd rather nobody on the team owns an archiving cron job.

Questions people actually ask

Is Matomo GDPR-compliant without a cookie banner?
It can be configured that way — Matomo supports a cookieless mode and offers data-protection tooling. It isn't automatic; the default setup and several features use cookies, so it's a configuration decision rather than a property of the product.
Can Matomo do revenue attribution by channel?
It can attribute ecommerce orders to campaigns and referrers. What it doesn't do out of the box is carry a subscription's renewals back to the first-touch channel to give you LTV by source.
Which is cheaper?
Matomo On-Premise, if you don't count your time — it's free with unlimited hits. Against Matomo Cloud, Revtrail's published plans start lower.
