The best Mixpanel alternatives

Two very different searches land on this phrase. One is a product team wanting better analysis or a lower bill. The other is a founder who adopted Mixpanel to answer a marketing question and found themselves maintaining an event taxonomy. The list is split accordingly.

1. PostHog

Best for replacing Mixpanel with more platform

An open-source product-analytics platform that also ships session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, and error tracking.

Where it wins
A million events a month free, plus session replay, feature flags, experiments, and surveys — and it's open source with a self-hosting path.
The tradeoff
Cookie-based identity by default puts it behind a consent banner in the EU, and the usage-based bill spans several metered products.
Pricing model
Usage-based with no base fee: the first 1M product-analytics events each month are free, then roughly $0.00005/event descending with volume, with replay, flags, and surveys metered separately. Check current pricing

2. Amplitude

Best for serious behavioural analysis at scale

An enterprise product-analytics suite for behavioural cohorts, retention analysis, and experimentation across large product teams.

Where it wins
2M events a month free, with the deepest cohort and retention analysis of anything on this list.
The tradeoff
Its power depends on instrumentation quality, which means an owner and ongoing taxonomy work.
Pricing model
A free plan with 2M events/month forever, a Plus plan that starts at $0 with the first 2M events included, and Growth/Enterprise quoted on request. Check current pricing

3. Revtrail

That's usBest for founders who wanted the marketing answer, not the product one

Cookieless web and mobile analytics where the headline number is revenue: payments arrive from verified Stripe and RevenueCat webhooks and are credited to the channel that first brought the visitor.

Where it wins
No event schema to design: a script tag reports pageviews and SPA routes, revtrail('signup') is the whole event API, and revenue arrives verified from Stripe or RevenueCat credited to the first-touch channel.
The tradeoff
Not a product-analytics tool. No session replay, no behavioural cohorts, no experimentation — if you need those, this is the wrong list entry.
Pricing model
Starter $9/mo and Growth $49/mo by monthly event allowance, every feature on both plans, 14-day trial, no free tier. Check current pricing

4. Google Analytics 4

Best for not paying for analytics at all

Google's free analytics platform, built to feed audiences and conversions into Google Ads across web and app.

Where it wins
Free at nearly any volume, with funnels, explorations, and BigQuery export, plus native Google Ads integration.
The tradeoff
The learning curve people already know about, plus consent-driven data loss in the EU.
Pricing model
Free at essentially any volume, with Analytics 360 sold to enterprises on request. Check current pricing

5. Matomo

Best for keeping the data on your own servers

The long-running open-source GA replacement, with ecommerce, heatmaps, session recording, and a plugin marketplace.

Where it wins
Free self-hosted with unlimited hits, and a suite that spans ecommerce, heatmaps, and session recording.
The tradeoff
It's a platform to operate, and it's aimed more at web analytics than at deep product analysis.
Pricing model
On-Premise Community is free and open source with unlimited hits; Matomo Cloud starts at €29/mo for 50k hits and €299/mo at 600k hits, with premium plugins sold as bundles. Check current pricing

Work out which question you're paying for

Product analytics answers 'what do users do inside the product, and which behaviours predict retention'. Marketing attribution answers 'which channel produced customers, and what were they worth'. Mixpanel is built for the first and can be pushed into the second. If you only ever wanted the second, an attribution tool is less work, less money, and less maintenance.

The taxonomy is the real cost of switching, and of staying

Any Mixpanel replacement in the product-analytics category asks for the same instrumentation work: naming events, agreeing on properties, keeping both consistent as the product changes. That work is why teams stay on tools they've outgrown. It's also why an attribution tool that needs no schema is a genuinely different proposition rather than a cheaper version of the same thing.

Running one of each is normal

The common end state isn't one tool. It's a product-analytics tool inside the app and an attribution tool in front of it, because the two questions are asked by different people on different days. If the budget only covers one, pick by which unanswered question is currently costing more money.

Questions people actually ask

What's the closest free alternative to Mixpanel?
PostHog's 1M free events a month or Amplitude's 2M, depending on whether you want the wider platform or the deeper analysis.
Can an attribution tool replace Mixpanel?
Only if what you needed from Mixpanel was acquisition and revenue reporting. It won't replace behavioural cohorts, session replay, or experimentation.
Do these tools need a cookie banner?
PostHog, Amplitude, Mixpanel, and GA4 typically do in the EU because of how they identify users. Revtrail's cookieless default doesn't.
