Revtrail vs Amplitude

Amplitude is a serious product-analytics platform with a free tier of two million events a month. If you have a product team running cohort analyses and experiments, it's the wrong tool to compare against a marketing attribution product — but people do compare them, so here's the honest version.

The instrumentation project is the real comparison

Amplitude's power comes from a well-designed event model — user properties, event properties, cohorts built on both. Getting there is a project with an owner, and organisations that do it well get analysis nobody else can do. Organisations that half-do it get a very expensive dashboard of inconsistently named events. Be honest about which you'd be before comparing feature lists.

Attribution is a different shape of problem

Amplitude can tell you what a converting user did. Connecting that back to the tweet that brought them, and keeping the credit attached through eleven months of renewals, is attribution work: first-touch capture on landing, a visitor identity that survives to checkout, and a payment webhook that reconciles against the payment provider. Revtrail does that path by default; in Amplitude it's something you build with what the platform gives you.

Two million free events is a lot of runway

For a pre-revenue product, Amplitude's free tier is more analytical capability than most teams can use. There's no argument for paying us instead if what you need is retention curves and behavioural cohorts. The argument starts when money is moving and nobody can say which channel produced it.

Who is actually asking the question

It's worth being concrete about the person, not the feature list. Amplitude is bought by a product manager who wants to know whether the new onboarding step improved week-four retention. Revtrail is bought by whoever just spent $2,000 on a sponsorship and wants to know whether it came back. Those two people rarely share a dashboard, and buying one tool to serve both usually means one of them stops opening it within a month.

The event volume conversation is different for each

Product analytics gets expensive by design: the more you instrument, the more events you send, and thorough instrumentation is the whole point of the tool. Attribution has a natural ceiling — pageviews plus a handful of named conversions — so volume tracks your traffic rather than your ambition. That's worth knowing when you're modelling next year's costs, because the two curves have genuinely different shapes.

So which one should you use?

Amplitude if you have a product team and real behavioural questions, and someone to own instrumentation. Revtrail if you're the one buying ads, writing posts, and sponsoring newsletters, and you need to know which of those produced paying customers by Friday.

Questions people actually ask

Can Amplitude do marketing attribution?
It can analyse acquisition sources you send it as properties. The first-touch-to-payment join, including renewals, is something you'd design and maintain rather than switch on.
Is Revtrail a product analytics tool?
No. There's no session replay, no feature flags, no behavioural cohort builder. Goals, funnels, and retention by source are as far into product analytics as we go.
Which one for a pre-revenue startup?
Amplitude's free tier, honestly — or nothing at all. Revenue attribution is worth paying for once there's revenue to attribute.
